A policeman was injured in an attack by suspected militants in a Srinagar neighbourhood on Saturday evening.

The attack comes a day after the police said they will ensure strict compliance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to avoid a repeat of the Eidgah incident in which a police inspector was shot at while playing cricket.

According to the sources, suspected militants opened fired at policeman Mohammad Hafiz Chad at Hamdaniya Colony in Srinagar’s Bemina neighbourhood. He was shot at from close range and suffered bullet injuries in abdomen and an arm.

The policeman was immediately rushed to the nearby SKIMS Medical College Hospital in Bemina for treatment. Police sources said Chad’s condition was stable and he was later shifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital for further treatment.

“Terrorists fired upon and injured one police personnel namely Mohammad Hafiz Chad S/O Gh Hassan Chad R/O Bemina at Hamdaniya Colony, Bemina. He has been shifted to hospital for treatment. Areas cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” J&K police posted on X.

On Thursday, Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani succumbed to his injuries more than a month after he was shot in Srinagar’s Eidgah area. The next day, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Vijay Kumar said that directions have been passed on to the rank and file of J&K police to follow the SOPs. “Fresh directions have been passed to all to follow the SOPs while on leave or while performing duty to avoid becoming soft targets,” Kumar said while talking to reporters on the side-lines of the wreath-laying ceremony for officer Wani. He was injured in the militant attack on October 29.

Saturday’s incident is the third targeted attack on the police in the Valley in the last one and a half months. On October 31, suspected militants killed Head Constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar outside his residence at Wailoo Kralpora village in north Kashmir’s Tangmarg.
